MELROSE — Catherine P. (Harrington) Boyd, 88, passed away at the Aberjona Nursing Center in Winchester on December 16, 2018.
Catherine was born in Somerville, on June 17, 1930 to the late Daniel and Nellie (O’Neil) Harrington. Catherine was raised in Somerville, graduated from St. Clements High School in Somerville and from Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Boyd worked as a registered nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital for over 35 years. She also volunteered for the Red Cross and assisted the Melrose School system administering eye exams every year in the elementary schools and at the high school.
Catherine was a longtime member and golfer at Bellevue Golf Club in Melrose, enjoyed going to St. Kitts every year with her Bellevue friends, traveling to Florida every March and the trip she took to Ireland. Mrs. Boyd was an avid reader, enjoyed reading mystery books, was excellent at Jeopardy and would do the New York Times crossword puzzle every Sunday morning.
Catherine was the beloved wife of 64 years to Dr. Edward R. Boyd. Loving mother of Ellen M. McIntosh and her husband Jeff of N.H., Elizabeth A. Garrett of Wash., Michael E. Boyd and his wife Karen of Stoneham, Maura L. Feener of Gloucester, Peter F. Boyd and his wife Cathryn of Methuen, Amy C. Conley of N.H. and Martha L. Wightman and her husband Bill of Melrose. Cherished grandmother of Danielle and Courtney, Joseph and Daniel, Sarah and Emily, Molly, Megan and Jillian. Proud great-grandmother of Carter, Grant and Michael. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation was held at the gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Wednesday, December 19. Funeral procession was from Gately Funeral Home on Thursday morning, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St. Wakefield.
