Melrose (2-1) looks to beat Wakefield today

BOSTON—The Melrose High girls’ indoor track team is off to a 2-1 start following back-to-back victories over Watertown and Stoneham. A big test will be their Freedom League contest against undefeated Wakefield today at Boston University. The two teams will race hoping to gain league advantage.
Melrose finished 2018 with a pair of wins starting Dec. 27 when they competed in a Middlesex League Dual meet against Watertown at Boston University and sprinted to a 74-21 win. Melrose enjoyed several first place finishes including a league-best finish in the 1 mile by Katie Duffy, along with her teammates Alex Cotugno and Kate Bidgood, who made it a 1-3 sweep. Charlotte Tysall also swept the whole league in the 2 mile and Melrose’s 4×200 relay Kaleya Casterglow, Nora Daley, Grace Donahue and Kaiya Thompson swept with a time of 1:58.54. Melrose also swept the 55 hurdles behind the legs of Kaiya Thompson (first), Grace Donahue and Megan Bidgood.
Their 4×400 relay team also placed first behind Kate Bidgood, Jenna Thorpe, Alyssa Champagne and Jenna Fracasso. Nora Daley placed 2nd in the 55 meter dash and Alyssa Champagne first in the 600 meter, helping lead a sweep of the event behind teammates Jenna Thorpe and Lizzie Casey. Jenna Fracasso was first in the 1000m while Melrose took the shot event too thanks to Joselyn Skane and Chelsea Otaluka.
Melrose also battled to victory on Dec. 20 against Stoneham. Among the big winners were Nora Daley, first in the 55m, Kaiya Thompson in the 55 hurdle, Giovana dos Santos Macha who was first in the 300 dash, Charlotte Tysall in the mile, and Katie Duffy, who swept the entire league in the 2 mile.
Melrose will compete in the Middlesex League Dual Meet today at Boston University at 3:00 p.m.
