The MIAA Board of Directors unanimously voted to cancel winter state tournaments during their virtual meeting on Oct. 29. The decision was recommended to the board by the Tournament Management Committee.
The board is now waiting for a report from the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) that is expected by the end of this week. The MIAA had previously voted to start the winter season on Nov. 30. The goal now is to have a similar season as the fall, in which teams will play limited regular season games but no state tournaments.
The EEA report will factor in the MIAA’s decision for a winter sports start date as well as any sport-specific modifications and what sports will be approved for the winter season.
According to a recent MIAA press release, once the EEA guidelines are released, the following steps will be taken:
MIAA Sport Committees will present proposed sport specific guidance and modifications to the Sports Medicine Committee within five school days after release of EEA guidance.
The Sports Medicine Committee will then present viable winter sports and their modifications to the MIAA Covid-19 Task Force.
The Task Force will then recommend sports to be included in the winter season to the Board of Directors. Within three days, the board will vote on the Task Force recommendations.
