WAKEFIELD — Wakefield Fire Department Engine 1 and Ladder 1 responded at about 7:04 a.m. this morning to the scene of a serious motorcycle accident on the southbound side of Route 128. A 29-year-old Lynn man reportedly lost control of his motorcycle, went off the highway and crashed in the woods just before Exit 39, near North Avenue.
The man sustained very serious injuries but they were not believed to be life-threatening by State Police and responding emergency personnel. He was transported by Action Ambulance to Veterans’ Field on North Avenue and taken from there by a waiting MedFlight helicopter to Mass. General Hospital.
Fire Chief Michael Sullivan said that due to rush hour traffic, it was determined that MedFlight was the fastest way to get him into Boston for treatment for his traumatic injuries. The crash reportedly backed up southbound traffic on Route 128 to Route 1 for a time after the crash.
Sullivan said that Wakefield Engine 2 secured the landing site at Veterans’ Field. Units also stood by until the scene on Route 128 was cleared. A Stoneham Engine covered until Wakefield Fire units returned.
