Enjoyed golf, playing cards and listening to Frank Sinatra

MELROSE — Ellis Walter Rushton “Al” passed away on Sunday, February 25 peacefully at home surrounded by his family. He was 90 years of age. Born and raised in Somerville, Al is the son of the late Jean and Walter Rushton.

Al’s greatest joy in life was spending time with his family, especially Sunday dinners. He loved to golf, bowl, play cards, listen to Frank Sinatra and play pool along with going to Las Vegas with his wife, Anne. He was a letter carrier in the Back Bay of Boston for 35 years.  

Al is the beloved husband of Anne Marie (Gianatassio) Rushton for 71 years.  He is the devoted father of Linda Silva and her husband Ed; Jeffrey Rushton and his wife Patty; and Del Haight and her partner Peter Capalbo. He is the loving grandfather of Michael Prisco and his wife Linda; Matthew Prisco and his wife Ashley; Robert DiGiammarino and his wife Christine; Melissa Rushton; and Jessica Rushton. He leaves his great grandchildren: Bryan, Gianna, Drew, Avery, Peter, Christian and Nathan.  He is the brother of the late Helen Williams. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. 

Family and friends are kindly invited to gather to share memories with the family on Friday, March 1 at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose from 4 to 7 p.m. Procession from the Gately Funeral Home on Saturday, March 2 at 8:45 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Assumption Church, 758 Salem St., Lynnfield at 10 a.m. Interment at Puritan Lawn Cemetery, Peabody.
