ObitMaher-webWAKEFIELD — Alexander J. Maher, 78, of Wakefield, died March 25 at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Alex was born in New York City on June 27, 1937 to John P. and Kathleen (Power) Maher.

He was raised in Floral Park, Long Island, N.Y. and was a graduate of Bishop Loughlin High School in Brooklyn and was also a graduate of Boston College.

He had worked and was retired from the town of Reading and was a resident of Wakefield since 1963.

Alex was the beloved husband of Jacquelyn J. (Nason) Maher. He was the loving father of James J. Maher and wife Gillian of Califonia, Anastasia M. Howell and husband Bill of Saugus and Rebecca J. Powell and husband John of Melrose. He was the brother of John P. Maher of Pennsylvania, Maureen O’Brien of New York and the late Kathleen Sweeney, Genevieve McCullough, James Maher and Richard Maher. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Katherine Brown, Jolie T. Powell, David J. and John A. Maher.

His funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home,
19 Yale Ave., Wakefield, Wednesday, at 9:30 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Florence Church, 47 Butler Ave., Wakefield, at 10:30 a.m.

Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the Funeral Home, Tuesday, 4 to 8 p.m. Interment, Puritan Lawn Cemetery.
