BOSTON — For the second straight year, Wakefield has a North Sectional champion in swimming.

Freshman Chris Anastasiades captured the Men’s 200 Individual Medley title in the North Fall Sectional Swimming and Diving Championships which were held on Saturday at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Pool.

Anastasiades’ performance highlighted many fine times turned in by Wakefield’s swimmers in the meet.

Anastasiades captured first with a time of 2:13.41 and beat out Billerica sophomore Troy Eakman who timed in at 2:24.99.

The freshman also placed second in the Men’s 100 Butterfly. Anastasiades secured the runner-up position as he clocked in at 1:01.73. Methuen’s Patrick Doyle, a junior, won the event in a time of 58.15 seconds.

Madison Guay, a senior, competed in the Women’s 100 Butterfly and finished in 11th place with a time of 1:03.11.

Guay also swam the Women’s 100 Breaststroke and posted a ninth place finish. She clocked in at 1:11.94.

In addition, Wakefield qualified for the Div. 2 All-State Meet in both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

The Women’s 200 Medley Relay team captured 12th overall with a qualifying time of 2:03.44. The four swimmers included Guay, senior Nicole Pecjo, senior Taylor Guarino and sophomore Caroline Sweeney.

The Women’s 400 Freestyle Relay team clinched a spot in the Div. 2 All-State Meet with an 11th place finish in a time of 3:59.98. The four swimmers included Pecjo, Guarino, Sweeney and Guay.

Wakefield also had an entry in the Women’s 200 Freestyle Relay. The team of Pecjo, senior Victoria Tringale, Sweeney and Guarino combined for a 14th place time of 1:50.67.

“The team had an amazing day. We qualified the 200 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay for states and improved the 200 Free Relay time,” said Coach Kathy Byrne. “Everyone swam their best times of the year, exactly what a coach hopes will happen at a championship meet. Chris A. won the 200 IM so he is North Sectional Champ. Madi did her best time of the year in the Fly and Breaststroke. I was so proud of the whole group.

“MIT is a cool place to swim,” added Byrne. “They swam fast. Everybody was faster than their seeded times. That is almost unheard of.”

Anastasiades and Guay will be competing in their individual events in the Div. 2 All-State Meet on Sunday. Also all three of Wakefield’s relays will be represented. Those swimmers include Guay, Guarino, Pecjo, Trinagle and Sweeney. The alternate is CC Colliton.

The Div. 2 All-State meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday at Blodgett Pool at Harvard University.
