WAKEFIELD — Anthony David Benedetto, 56, was born on March 18, 1963 in Winchester to Anthony R. and Rosella (Vittozzi) Benedetto. David grew up in Wakefield and was a 1981 graduate of Wakefield High School. He and lifelong friend Walter Havey would go on to open the first student operated bank at WHS and for the entire country.

Following high school, Dave began his journey on what would soon become one of the most prized accomplishments of his life, graduating from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y. in 1985 as a marine engineer and commissioned officer in the USNR. Throughout his academy days, David formed fond memories of sailing to every continent on the globe except Antarctica, learning military tradition, and acquiring many skills and experiences that he would carry with him throughout his life. Following that, David received a Master’s Degree from the United States Naval War College in Newport, R.I. Eventually David would even go on to form his own business, Benedetto Construction Management.

David enjoyed a successful career as an engineer and team leader. He also made many notable contributions as a Naval officer, even being promoted to the rank of Commander (0-5). He was known for his love of the tropical white uniform. He also contributed to the design of the SeaWolf submarine. During his employment in the Navy, he met his beautiful wife Tina from Milan, Italy, and they were married on October 4, 1995.

David was known for his contagious laugh, bright smile, and twinkle in his eye. He could walk into any room and instantly become the life of the party. He had the biggest heart and was extremely generous, to the point of total altruism. The second to youngest out of 5 children, he did not shy away from getting into a little mischief. He would tell stories of his antics such as playing with matches under the bed and other high jinks, but he seemed to always get away with it through his charm and wit. David even earned the title of “Charmer” in high school, and was also voted most popular boy in the 7th grade. He had the best sense of humor and could make you laugh even with just a look.

Intelligent beyond measure, he was able to retain information with ease and ace a test with minimal effort, but still was one of the most hard-working people you’d ever meet, and could always be found busy working on a task if you did not know of his whereabouts. He was also a life-long learner, always making sure to check his email for the word of the day and enjoyed reading and keeping up with current events and politics. When he wasn’t working, he loved to spend time with family and friends, and when the weather allowed, taking dips in a pool, basking in the sunshine with his favorite tunes playing, and watching the New England Patriots.

A talented musician, David expressed many of his deepest emotions and happiness through his singing, guitar playing, and composure. It was never a surprise to see a guitar in David’s arms, his hands moving magically as they slid up and down the strings. He never turned down an opportunity to entertain a crowd of any size. He loved music of all kinds and enjoyed artists such as The Beatles, Elvis Presley, John Denver, Simon & Garfunkel, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith, Bad Company, America, The Allman Brothers, The Outlaws, Three Dog Night, and many others.

He carried a strong Italian passion for food and gave his wife much satisfaction by happily devouring anything that she made. He did also enjoy cooking on his own and made the best breakfast sandwiches, corned beef hash, and bacon that had the perfect amount of crisp every time…
except when he would burn it!

David treasured his family, which included many cousins that he stayed close with throughout his life, some of whom had affectionately given him the nickname “Aldo.” He loved spending time with his family at the Crystal Community Club in Wakefield. He was also very proud of being the nephew of John A. Volpe, the 61st and 63rd governor of Massachusetts. John A. Volpe would serve as one of the most influential figures in David’s life.

Many people beyond the ability to list here were close with David, some notable comrades being Walter Havey, Charlie Benedetto and his son Chuck, Sean Benedetto Divine, Joe Carpenito, and Mike Leavitt. All of whom he had shared many memories and good times with over the years.

David was larger than life and his joy and laughter will forever remain in our hearts and minds. He was a man of action, and not words. His legacy will never be forgotten and continues to motivate us every day, even when the waters are no longer calm, and the storm has ensued.

He is survived by his beloved wife Tina, daughter Melissa Jean, son John David, and dog, a Bichon named Ginger, all of Wakefield; his two brothers, Robert A. Benedetto and his wife Catherine of Derry, N.H., George P. Benedetto of Manchester, N.H., his two sisters, Paula L. of Dunedin, Fla., and Susan J. of Tewksbury, his nephews, Steven B. Russell and his wife Jessica of Dunedin, Fla., Jonathan B. Russell of Jupiter, Fla., and Justin B. Russell and his wife Taylor of Fort Bragg, N.C., Anthony R. Benedetto of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and his niece Robin A. Fennell and her husband Darrell of Spring Hill, Fla. David was also predeceased by his parents Anthony R. Benedetto and Rosella (Vittozzi) Benedetto.

His funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Florence Church, 47 Butler Ave., Wakefield on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. There will be no visiting hours.
