redo-Barbara-Mahoney-webMELROSE — On May 2, in her home of 52 years in Melrose and surrounded by family, at the age of 86, Barbara Ann Mahoney passed away peacefully.

Barbara, a loving and devoted mother, is survived by her son and his wife, John L. and Christine M. Mahoney of Melrose; her daughter and her husband, Patricia A. and Dean L. Groves of Melrose, and her son, Frank E. Mahoney Jr. of Melrose. Barbara is also survived by three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, Christine and Christopher Brady of Tewksbury and their children, Reaghan and Norah; Melissa and Eric Garfield of Wakefield and their children, Jake and Molly, and Kimberly and Timothy Talbot of North Reading and their children, Liam and Callahan.

Barbara was born on April 5, 1930 in Everett. She was the youngest of two children. Barbara married Frank Mahoney Sr. on May 29, 1949 and lived in Malden and Everett before landing in Melrose.

Barbara owned her own business in Melrose, The Peppermill. Later, she became a bank manager for the Shawmut Bank Company. Barbara ended her working career as a customer service representative for the Filene’s/Macy’s Corporation.

Barbara enjoyed family gatherings on Sunday afternoons with many family and friends stopping by for a well-cooked meal. She enjoyed spending time with her three grandchildren and more recently, six great-grandchildren. Barbara and Frank Sr. were both active members of the North Shore Irish Association of Melrose, many sports organizations and children activities over the years.

Visitation will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster St., Melrose, on Friday, May 6, from 9 until 11 a.m. with a funeral Mass to follow 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish, 9 Herbert St., Melrose.
