WAVE in WWII; former assistant Town Clerk

LYNNFIELD — Betty J. Hayter, a longtime a well-known Lynnfield resident, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2014 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers.

Born in Seattle, Wash. on June 25, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Arthur C. and Jeanette (Day) Ellenson.

Betty was raised in Seattle, Wash. and later Sacramento, Calif.

Betty served as a WAVE in the U.S. Navy during World War II where she met her husband, Charles. Later, upon moving to Massachusetts, she pursued her degree at Endicott College in Beverly and subsequently attended Boston University.

While living in Lynnfield she became an active member in the Centre Congregational Church and was the acting chairwoman of the Lynnfield Council on Aging for many years.

Before her retirement, Betty had worked for 20 years as the assistant Town Clerk for the Town of Lynnfield.

Betty was the wife of her beloved husband, the late Charles L. Hayter. She was the loving mother of Peggy Batchelder and her husband Roger of Lynnfield, Charles A. Hayter and his wife Sherrill of North Reading, Lori H. Giarrusso and her husband Richard Jr. of Haverhill and Nancy Ricci and her husband Paul of Pennsylvania. She was the adoring grandmother of Ricky C. and his wife Amy, Tiana, Christopher and wife Melissa, Carolyn and husband PK, Ryan, Rhett, Ross, Debi, and Jake, and the great-grandmother of Ricky J., Bentley and Colton. She was also the sister of the late Curtis Ellenson.

Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave. Wakefield on Friday, Oct. 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. Her memorial service will be held at the Centre Congregational Church, 5 Summer St., Lynnfield on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. Interment will be private.
