MELROSE—It had all the ingredients for the perfect day for members of the MHS girls’ tennis team on Tuesday May 16 at Lyons Court in Melrose. Seasonable weather, a competitive rival and a senior celebration. It all resulted in a 3-2 win for Melrose, who counted on both singles and doubles play to top the Wilmington Wildcats.

Taking wins were Anna Wong at second singles and doubles pairs Lara Flank Contin and Maya Knupp and Kungsan Wogthing with Aura Machanic at second doubles. Coming up short were Kate McAndrew in third singles and a strong Ava Piccone in first singles

“Ava fought hard at first singles but lost in a tie breaker,” reports coach Lydia Mays. But the overall effort was enough to capture the victory.

“It was a great team win, everyone was cheering the team on the whole time,” said coach Lydia Mays after the win.

All the better for it to happen among family and friends on Senior Day. Coach Mays credited her two seniors, captain Anna Wong and Kate McAndrew, for their efforts and competitive spirit all season. “They are amazing people and players. Sweet and supportive of everyone, show commitment to the team,” she says. “They will be tremendously missed next year!”
