Warriors ranked 5th in MA large school division
Published in the October 6, 2017 edition.
MELROSE — Two years ago, the Warriors went to Greenwood Park in an attempt to knock off a very talented Melrose squad. It did not go according to plan as the Raiders went 1-4 to rout the Warriors and defend their league title. Although last year it was the Warriors who got the victory at home, it was a good feeling to head back to Greenwood Park and take care of business on Melrose’s home course.
The boys’ ran another tactical race sitting behind a trio of Melrose harriers through the first loop only to overtake them on the second half of the race, placing 1 through 7 before Melrose’s first runner.
Billy Stevens held onto his early lead to grab the victory after spending the first few weeks nursing an injury. Stevens ran a time of 17:29 just ahead of the rest of the pack.
Tanner Jellison (17:33), Matt Roberto (17:33), Matt Greatorex (17:34), Riley Brackett (17:34), Tommy Lucey (17:34), and Rohan Singhvi (17:35) came in comfortably together.
Casey Brackett was a little behind Melrose’s number one as he finished 9th in a time of 17:56.
In the Junior Varsity short course first-year runner Ian Schermerhorn, a sophomore, placed first in a time of 11:37.
Ranked 5th in large school division
Wakefield was recently ranked 5th in the boys’ large school division by the MSTCA. This essentially relates to a state ranking since the Warriors also beat Pentucket, the number one ranked school in the small division, at the Frank Kelley Invitational last weekend.
WMHS is in the top five with St. John’s Shrewsbury, Wellesley, Lowell and Concord Carlisle.
The Warriors are back home on Tuesday, October 10 vs. Burlington at 3:30 p.m.
