WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield High boys’ soccer team held their annual banquet recently to celebrate the 2019 season.

The Warriors broke through this year, making the tournament by getting second place in the Freedom while also having a record over .500 at 7-6-4.

Wakefield, who had last made the tournament in 2015 as a Div. 3 team, played in the Div. 2 tournament for the first time in over 20 years. The 13th-seeded Warriors beat No. 4 Shawsheen Tech in overtime, 1-0 in the first round. They then went on to beat Central Catholic 3-1 in the quarterfinals before falling to Concord-Carlisle in the semifinals at Manning Field in Lynn.

At the banquet, Wakefield’s coaches handed out team awards and congratulated the four Middlesex League All-Stars: Pat Collins, Anthony Pellegrino, Joao Valdevino and Matt Sellers.

“It was a good celebration of a very successful season,” said head coach Ilir Ujkaj. “What came out of it was that this season should not be the exception but should be the norm for the Wakefield soccer program.”

The team awards were presented to junior Guy Jacob (Unsung Hero), junior Logan Cosgrove (Most Improved), senior Craig Hatfield (Tom Nestor Award), senior Nick Petersen (Coaches Award), senior Anthony Pellegrino (Golden Boot, 9 goals scored) and senior Pat Collins (MVP).
