MELROSE—The Melrose High boy’s outdoor track team earned plenty of hardware at the 2017 Middlesex League Championship Meet on Tuesday, May 17 at Regis College. Melrose finished 6th out of 12 Middlesex teams (Woburn taking top spot) and third among Freedom teams.

Melrose had several medaling performances, including sophomore standout Liam Rittenburg, who placed second in the 400 hurdles at 59.09. Teammate Sean Conlan came 3rd in the 800 and Isaac Siede finished 3rd in the 100 dash at 11.43. Melrose showed dominance once again in the two mile with Kevin Wheelock (2nd) and Adam Cook (4th) medaling. Senior Nick Chan continued his strong season in a number of events as he finished 5th in the high jump (with a reach of 6’0″) and also fifth in the triple jump. And Junior Rey Guity qualified for states in the high jump with a personal best jump of 5’10”.

Melrose’s 4×800 relay medaled in fourth behind the efforts of Adam Cook, Sean Conlan, Griffin Barriss, and Kevin Wheelock.

Coach Tim Morris credited his team’s performance. “They did well and it was really the first time the guys competed in warm weather this spring.”

Competing in the 200 dash were Steven Abbot, Pete Wiesen and James Talbot. Competing in the 100 dash was Frantz Pierrot and Rey Guity. Guity also competed in the high jump. Participating in the long jump were Liam Rittenburg, Frantz Pierrot, and Pete Wiesen. Competing in the 400 dash was Griffin Barriss. Running the one mile was Steve Stomski. Performing in the 400 hurdles was Will Hanlon. Melrose’s 4×100 relay was represented by Steve Abbott, Isaac Siede, Pete Wiesen, Rey Guity. Competing in the triple jump was Isaac Siede. Collin Casey, Adam Caffey and Charles Femino represented Melrose in the shot put.

Those who have qualified to compete at States on Sunday, May 28 at Burlington High include Adam Cook and Kevin Wheelock in the 2 mile, Sean Conlan in the 800 meters, Nick Chan in the high jump and triple jump, Isaac Siede in the 100 meter, Liam Rittenburg in the 400 hurdles, Collin Casey in the shot put, Steven Abbott in the long jump and 200 and Steve Stromski in the one mile, Griffin Barrsis in the 400meters, Rey Guity in the high jump, Peter Wiesen in the long jump, the 4×100 relay team of Steven Abbott, Isaac Siede Pete Wiesen and Rey Guity, and their 4×800 relay team of Kevin Wheelock, Griffin Barriss, Sean Conlan and Adam Cook.

Earning All Star honors for their work this season are Kevin Wheelock, Steven Abbott, Sean Conlan, Adam Cook, Nick Chan, Isaac Siede and Liam Rittenburg.

Melrose will compete at the Div. 3 State Finals this Sunday morning at Burlington High.
