LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield High boys’ tennis team punched its ticket to the Division 3 North state tournament May 18, as they shutout guest Salem 5-0 at Lynnfield Middle School.

With that non-league victory, the Pioneers’ record improved to 8-5 overall.

“We are very excited about it,” said Pioneers head coach Joe Dunn, as the team has not been in the states the past few seasons. “This was our goal from the beginning.”

At first singles, sophomore Max Rothermund won his match in two sets, 6-0, 6-0. Second-singles player Arlex Correa also won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. At third singles, junior Colin Lamusta won his match in two sets, 6-2, 6-2.

In first doubles action, sophomore Mike Gentile and junior Sean Murray won, 6-1, 6-0. Junior Andrew Seelig and junior Joe Pavao won, 6-0, 6-1, at second doubles.

Upcoming games

On Wednesday, May 24, the Pioneers take on Ipswich at home. The locals will be looking for the season split against Tigers in a match that was rained out on Monday.

Lynnfield will wrap up the season on Thursday, May 25 as they visit Salem looking for the season sweep.

Both matches will start at 3:30 p.m.

The Division 3 North state tournament will begin next week for the Pioneers.
