Warriors shine at Div. 3 State Relays, take sixth overall

BURLINGTON — The Wakefield Memorial High boys’ track team crowned two champions, had several entries medal and placed sixth overall in the team scoring in the Div. 3 State Relays which were held on Sunday at Burlington High School.

The javelin relay team captured first overall with a combined distance of 426-9. The trio of throwers were junior Cole Mottl, senior Eric Smith and senior Kevin Russo. There were 16 teams that competed in the event.

The 4×800 relay A team also claimed first place with a time of 8:23.00 The A relay team included senior Alec Rodgers, sophomore Matt Greatorex, junior Ryan Sullivan and junior Adam Roberto. There were 22 teams that ran the event.

Wakefield’s 4×400 relay A team took third overall as the four runners clocked in at 3:38.41 among the 27 entries. The four runners were Roberto, Sullivan, Greatorex and freshman Brian Smith.

The throwing events were an area where the Warriors excelled as the shot put relay team secured a fourth place finish and the discus relay team earned a sixth place showing.

The shot put relay team of senior Jared Regan, sophomore Pat Redmond and Mottl combined for a fourth place showing of 126-7. There were 15 teams in the event.

The discus relay team included sophomore Patrick Bertini, sophomore Charles Senior and junior Joe Connell. The trio took sixth with a distance of 297-3. A total of 15 teams were entered in the event.

“I was very happy overall the way we competed and how we were able to get 31 points against the state’s best teams,” said Coach Ruben Reinoso.

Wakefield came in sixth overall in the meet. Winning the meet was Burlington with 69 points as the Red Devils made the most of competing on their home track and field at Varsity Field. Taking second, third, fourth and fifth overall were Bishop Feehan (58 points), Pembroke (38 points), Tewksbury (37 points) and Dracut (32 points).

The Warriors had a number of other entries as well in the meet, although those teams didn’t place among the top six and score points.

The 4×100 relay A and B teams took 12th at 45.98 and 27th at 48.92 seconds among 33 teams that finished the race. The A team included junior Dan Sallade, sophomore Henry Stikeman, Russo and senior Eric Chi. The B team included sophomore Marc Biennestin, junior Carmen Sorrentino, sophomore Jared Hurley and freshman Trevor Noble.

The 4×200 relay A and B teams placed seventh and 23rd among the 28 teams that finished the race. Their times were 1:36.25 and 1:43.88. The A team consisted of Chi, Sallade, junior Dan Summers and senior Joe Boudreau. The B team included senior Devin Pronco, Hurley, Noble and senior Zach Conlon.

Wakefield also had a B relay team entered in the 4×400. The team of senior Alex Guerriero, sophomore Max Hinchey, sophomore Ryan Ritchie and senior Tyler Whipple posted a time of 3:58.62 among the 27 teams entered.

The Warriors also had a 4×800 B relay team which finished 20th among the 22 teams entered. The team of junior Shahnawaz Anwar, Whipple, sophomore Ryan Smith and sophomore Riley Brackett combined for a time of 9:27.04.

The 4×1600 meter relay team of junior Jack Stevens, freshman Carter Margolis, junior Jackson Kehoe and senior Chris Skeldon came in 10th overall in the 12-team field with a time of 20:18.96.

The Warriors had two teams entered in the 1600 Sprint Medley relay. There were 33 teams in the event total. The A team of Ritchie (800 meters), Stikeman (200 meters), Summers (200 meters) and Boudreau (400 meters) came in 11th in a time of 3:58.37. The B team included junior Matt Finn (800), Pronco (200), freshman Derrick Scheeler (200) and Guerriero (400) and the foursome finished 32nd overall at 4:22.94.

The distance medley relay team finished in 11th place in a time of 11:31.99. There were 23 teams in the race. The four runners included senior Rich Custodio (1200 meters), Rodgers (800), Brian Smith (400) and sophomore Tom Lucey (1600).

Wakefield’s 4×110 shuttle hurdle relay team grabbed 10th among the 12 teams that finished the race. The team of Conlon, junior Peter Crump, sophomore Tom Galvin and Scheeler ran a time of 1:18.87.

Galvin, Sorrentino and Biennestin were entered in the high jump but didn’t make opening height among the 13 teams that competed.

The long jump relay team of Crump, Sorrentino and Biennestin secured 14th among 16 teams with a combined leap of 53-5 1/2.

Wakefield’s triple jump relay team came in 11th among 13 teams with a distance of 105-10 1/4. The trio of jumpers were Crump, Galvin and Pronco.

The Warriors will gear up for a big meet against Burlington on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at the Beasley Track.
