WINTHROP — Edward F. Lowney, 84, of Winthrop and formerly of Revere and East Boston, passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday, April 30.

Ed was a graduate of East Boston High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War, in the U.S. Army 45th Infantry Div. 180th Tank Co, and held a rank of Sergeant First Class.

Prior to his retirement, Ed was a long time employee at N.E. Telephone Co.

He was a loving father dedicated to his family and enjoyed sailing.

He was the devoted husband of 55 years to Catherine F. (Brazil) Lowney. Ed leaves his loving children, Mary Ann Mahoney and her husband Matt of Winthrop, Kathleen Kennedy and her husband Jack of Wakefield, Edward Lowney and his wife Erin of Easton and Daniel J. Lowney and his wife JoAnne of Winthrop. He also leaves his adoring grandchildren, Ann, Meg and Joe Mahoney, Jack Kennedy and his fiancée Anne Czaplinski, Katie Kennedy and her fiancée Jared Byrne, Daniel and Allison Kennedy, Julia, Jessica and Dana Lowney and Daniel T. Lowney. He was the dear brother of Virginia Dill of Revere and the late Herbert and Robert Lowney and sister Marie Zachar. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be from the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, 210 Winthrop St., Winthrop, on Friday, May 6, at 9 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited.

Interment will be held later at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Visiting hours will be held in the funeral home on Thursday, from 4-8 p.m.
