Warriors turn in some good performances in showcase

NASHUA, N.H. — Although there weren’t any dual meets last week, the Wakefield Memorial High boys’ outdoor track team broke up its practice routine by competing in the Nashua North Invitational Meet which was held last Saturday at Nashua North High School.

The Warriors got an opportunity to stay sharp and run against some of the finer athletes from the region as they had a host a good performances throughout the showcase.

Wakefield’s top finish came in the two mile as Matt Greatorex, a junior, captured second overall in a time of 9:46.42. Greatorex’s time is currently one of the fastest in Massachusetts.

Pat Redmond, a junior, secured fourth overall in the shot put as he had a heave of 42’6”.

In the discus, Charles Senior, a junior, grabbed fifth place overall as he had a throw of 112’2”.

Nick McGee, a senior, captured fifth in the mile as he ran a great time of 4:26.88 despite the weather.

Adam Roberto, a senior captain, claimed sixth place in the 800 meter run as he posted a time of 2:02.89, which was a great time despite the weather and how early in the season it is.

In the 100 meter dash final, senior captain Dan Sallade came in 12th overall as he clocked in 11.96 seconds. Sallade finished seventh in the preliminaries at 11.91 seconds to advance to the 16-runner final.

Also competing in the 100 meter dash were senior captain Carmen Sorrentino (12.93 seconds) and junior Carmilla-Smith (18.34 seconds).

Sam Morey, a junior, placed 13th in the 110 meter high hurdles as he timed in at 18.72 seconds in the 15-runner final. Morey finished 16th in the preliminaries with a time of 18.54 seconds.

Senior Peter Crump and sophomore Tom Galvin finished in 22nd place and 26th place in the preliminaries of the high hurdles as they posted times of 19.40 seconds and 21.35 seconds.

In the 200 meter dash, Dan Summers, a senior, took 13th overall in a time of 24.55 seconds.

Riley Bracket, a junior, also ran the two mile and clocked in at 10:50.93 for 20th place.

In the 300 meter hurdles, Morey placed 16th overall at 49.77 seconds, while sophomore Derrick Scheeler and Galvin placed 18th and 21st in the event with times of 50.16 seconds and 51.59 seconds.

Junior Jared Hurley was Wakefield’s lone entry in the 400 meter run. He took 25th overall at 58.90 seconds.

The Warriors had 12th place showing in the 4×800 meter relay with a time of 9:28.26.

In the 800 meter run, freshman Tanner Jellison and junior Ryan Ritchie also competed. Jellison took 10th at 2:06.08 and Ritchie placed 27th in a time of 2:13.02.

Also throwing the discus were Redmond and junior Pat Bertini. Redmond took 21st with a distance of 89’5” and Bertini came in 24th with a heave of 87’10”.

Devin Shaw, a senior, placed 14th overall in the javelin with a throw of 112’8” and CJ Wixon, a senior, finished 32nd with a distance of 95’5”. Wixon also took 18th in the shot put with a throw of 36’0”.

Two Warriors competed in the long jump. They were Sorrentino and sophomore Trevor Noble. Sorrentino finished in 25th place with a leap of 16’4 1/2” and Noble was 34th with a distance of 14’10 1/4”.

There were five more Wakefield distance runners in the mile. Junior Tom Lucey (12th, 4:46.60), senior captain Ryan Sullivan (21st, 4:52.11), sophomore Carter Margolis (27th, 4:55.57), sophomore Casey Brackett (34th, 5:01.97), and freshman Matt Roberto (36th, 5:06.87) were the Warrior entries in the event.

Wakefield had three competitors in the triple jump. Crump, Galvin, and Morey placed 17th, 18th, and 20th with distances of 32’7”, 32’6”, and 31’6”.

The Warriors had their meet against Melrose rained out on Tuesday afternoon. That meet has been rescheduled for Thursday, May 11 at 3:45 p.m. at the Shaun Beasley Track and Field facility.

Wakefield’s next dual meet is Tuesday, May 2 at 3:30 p.m. against Burlington at Varsity Field in Burlington.

First up, however, is the Div. 3 State Relays which will be held Saturday at Sandwich High School.
