WWII veteran worked maintenance for WHA

Obit-Whelchel-webWAKEFIELD — Burl “Bud” Whelchel, 88, a longtime Wakefield resident of more than 50 years, died Thursday, June 25, in Melrose.
Born in Stafford, Kan. on Sept. 26, 1926, he was the son of the late Charles A. and Marie (Hawver) Whelchel.
Burl served in the United States Navy during World War II and later worked in maintenance for the Wakefield Housing Authority. He was also a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Wakefield.
Burl was the beloved husband of the late Eveline (Laundry) Whelchel. He was the loving father of James A. Whelchel of Wakefield, Carol Leland and husband Allen of Stoneham, Cathy M. Hubis of Pennsylvania and Alice W. Popp of Wakefield. Burl was also the loving grandfather of Jayne and Joshua Leland and Valerie and Stephen Hubis.
A memorial service for both Bud and Eveline will be held in the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Friday, July 3, at noon. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held prior to the service from 10 a.m. to noon.
