NORTH READING — Brendan Carter, 19, of North Reading repeated as the champion of the 9th annual North Reading 5K Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning.

He completed the road coarse on a crisp, sunny morning with a time of 16:15.6, which was just about 35 seconds faster than the time he posted last year (16:51).

Carter is a sophomore at Assumption College where he competes in track for the greyhounds year-round. He specializes in the steeplechase as well as indoor and outdoor distances generally between one mile to 5K. He said highlight of his cross country season this year was completing an 8K course in 26:52. A proud Hornet alumnus, Carter was a member of both the 2013 and 2016 championship track teams at NRHS.

On the female side of the roster, the top honors went to Jackie Solimine, 23, of Haverhill, who crossed the finish line at Ipswich River Park in 18:02.9 to finish eighth overall among all runners.

Sponsored by the Hornet Hall of Fame Committee (HOF), the organizers were thrilled with the outcome of the race and the successful, community-oriented event that it has become. Incredibly, noted co-race director Joe Davis, a record number of runners pre-registered – 1,769 to be exact – while a total of 1,581 showed up and completed the 5K course. Due to the success of the online registration drive, they chose not to allow race-day registration this year.

Proceeds from the race enable the HOF Committee to offer two $500 scholarships annually to one male and one female graduating senior who have been active in the track programs at NRHS. The scholarship is given in memory of a popular former teacher at NRHS, Frederick A. Keyes. Two generations of the Keyes’ family participates in the race each year and presents the trophies to the top male and female finishers.

Additional proceeds are used to “support the athletic teams at the high school to make purchases that would be outside of the typical budget,” Davis said. For example, race proceeds have been used to purchase a scoreboard for the Little School softball complex as well as the installation of safety fencing at the Hood School baseball field, the installation of safety netting behind the goal posts at Arthur J. Kenney Field and to make contributions toward the purchase of sod and the sprinkler installation for the new grass fields at the Middle School/High School campus, he added.

Turkey Trot race funds have also benefitted each of the elementary schools too, through the establishment five years ago of the elementary school challenges which encourages the students to get out of bed and be active. Awards are earned based on the percentage of participation of the student body in the race at each school for grades 2 through 5 (to account for the differences in enrollments at each school).

Once again, the Little School won the $300 prize to be used to purchase fitness equipment for the school’s PE classes with a 51 percent participation rate. Both the Batchelder (26%) and Hood (21%) schools were awarded $200 this year, which is double the prize awarded to the runners’ up last year. Davis said that was done “in recognition of the efforts to get youngsters involved in participating in the trot.”

Not to be outdone, the Middle School was also awarded $300 for the purchase of PE equipment for surpassing 100 participants, which is the goal the student body is asked to meet each year. This year, “109 (students) got out of bed to run,” Davis said. An impressive figure considering it is a holiday and the starting gun goes off promptly at 8 a.m.

Family challenge

The family challenge has proven to be quite popular. Each family is encouraged to form a team of four family members and each team is ranked by the combined times of those four runners. There were 50 family teams acknowledged in the race this year. (These results are posted in today’s Transcript.)

The Solimine family won this family team event with a combined time of 1:22:08.4, fueled by Jackie’s victory in the woman’s bracket of 18:02.9. Teammates Julie (19:49.8), Jenna (19:56.9) and Scot (24:18.8) Solimine also contributed to their team’s speedy result and average time of 20:32.1.

Prizes were awarded to the top three family teams as well as the top three finishers in each age group, from 10 and under to 70-99. The top three finishers in each age group or family group were provided with gift certificates from a variety of local businesses, Davis said, and sponsor New Balance also donated gifts.

The top 100 overall finishers as well as the top 50 family teams and the top three finishers in each age category are included in today’s Transcript. To view the complete list of 1,581 finishers, go to https://www.northshoretiming.com/ and look for the Turkey Trot race results from Nov. 23.
