BOSTON – The Massachusetts Senate has passed its version of the Fiscal Year 2018 state budget, and Senator Jason Lewis has announced the passage of a budget amendment for a key Melrose priority.
Lewis secured a budget amendment for $75,000 in funding for the repair of the stone wall of the West Wyoming Municipal and Veterans’ Cemetery. Officially dedicated in 1857, the cemetery comprises 26,000 burial sites and has long served as an important site for veterans’ and other observances in the city of Melrose. The rustic stone wall surrounding Wyoming Cemetery was built in 1937.
“I’m very pleased to have secured funding to repair an integral feature of such an important, visible community site in Melrose,” said Senator Lewis. “Particularly heading into Memorial Day weekend, it is fitting that we honor our cherished service members who have been laid to rest by appropriately maintaining the site of their final resting spot.”
With the passage of the FY18 budget in the Senate, both the Senate and the Massachusetts House of Representatives will name conference committee members who will work to draft a final budget, compromising on differences between the two houses. That final budget will then go to Governor Charlie Baker’s desk for his signature and possible line-item vetoes.
With State Representative Paul Brodeur having secured identical funding in the Massachusetts House of Representatives’ version of the FY18 budget, this funding should be included in that final “conference committee” version of the budget headed to Governor Baker’s desk.
