WAKEFIELD — A Salem Street resident was indicted recently by a Middlesex grand jury on child rape charges.

Josilei DeCastro, 39, was charged with rape of a child by force (2 counts), aggravated rape of a child (2 counts) and indecent assault and battery on a child under the age of 14 in connection with an alleged three-year long period of sexual assaults on a child alleged to have begun when the child was 4.

The alleged victim is also a Wakefield resident. The victim and defendant are known to each other.

DeCastro, who owns a painting company based in Lowell, was arraigned on July 7 in Middlesex
Superior Court. First Assistant Clerk Magistrate Matthew Day set bail at $25,000 cash.

The next scheduled hearing in this case is Wednesday, Aug. 10.

Because of the nature of the alleged crime, not much information was provided by either Wakefield Police or the Middlesex district attorney’s office.

The prosecutor assigned to this case is Assistant District Attorney Marisa Tagliareni.
