MELROSE — The City’s 2021 flushing program will begin on September 13 and will run through early November. This program is undertaken to improve water quality and to test and operate our water system’s valves and hydrants. Flushing hours are generally between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Please check www.cityofmelrose.org or call the Department of Public Works (DPW) at 781‐665‐0142 to determine our daily list of streets to be flushed. The website will also be updated on flushing days, no later than 4 p.m., to reflect the completed streets and the following day’s anticipated schedule. Some streets may require re‐listing for completion, so check for the completion of your street on www.cityofmelrose.org or call the DPW at 781‐665‐0142.

Residents should follow these procedures to minimize the impacts of this program:

1) Do not use your water when we are flushing or testing on your street. If you do, sediment could get into your house’s pipes which could cause them to block, reduce pressure, and/or cause discoloration in your water. This situation could be expensive for you to repair. If you experience a problem, please contact the DPW for assistance.

2) You may experience rusty or cloudy water from the testing. Once the work is completed, run the cold water until it is clear. Do not run the hot water, do not do laundry, do not use your dishwasher, and do not add water to your pool until your cold water runs clean. Should you inadvertently do laundry during flushing which results in rust stains on your clothing, please contact the DPW.

3) We advise all residents to draw water prior to their street flushing by filling a number of pots or water bottles for use between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Please call the DPW at 781‐665‐0142 if you have a special medical situation we should be aware of. We thank you for your patience during our biennial flushing program.
