Barnes finishes with 5th place state medal
MELROSE—After long and very successful 2024 fall seasons, the Melrose High boys and girls cross country teams finished their fall with an appearance at the 2024 All-State Meet of Champions at Willard Field in Devins, MA last Saturday. There, they raced among the best in Div. 2 and had solid performances to show for it.
On the boy’s side, Melrose league champion Caleb Barnes earned a state medal with a 5th place finish and a time of 16:11.63, besting nearly 200 athletes from across Massachusetts. Coach Alex DeRosa sent 6 steady athletes to represent Melrose and they did in style. Following Barnes in order were Henry McCormack, John Strong, Ben Dugan, Jad Jamaleddine and Adam Caldwell.
Over on the girls’ side, Melrose was well represented by a Super 7 collection of runners to compete with the division’s best. Leading Melrose was the talented Reilly Powell, who was 14th with a time of 20:04. Following her in order, were teammates: Naomi Breay, Maizie Frakt, Ella Ugino, Kensington Ludlum, Dakota Digiorgio and Skylar Blanch.
It will be an exciting return for both teams, who collected medals and trophies (including a league title for the girls) and advanced to division finals.
Both return young talent that will be sure to see them ready to repeat their successes in 2025.
