BOXFORD — On Oct. 18, Paul Daley and Owen Doherty were the two Lynnfield High representatives at the Cape Ann League Open at Far Corner in Boxford.
Out of the 20 players competing (two members from each school), Daley scored 64 points (Stableford scoring) to place second overall while Doherty had 54 points to come in 12th.
“Paul had a very good round,” said Pioneers head coach Mike Moresco, about the senior captain.
Daley was also the lone Pioneer competing in the Division 3 North Sectionals at Stow Acres (South Course) on Oct. 22.
He just finished one spot out of qualifying for the state final as he came in tied for 12th at 83 on the par-72 layout.
“I felt bad for him,” admitted Moresco. “He only missed qualifying by a couple of strokes.”
In their final match of the regular season, the Pioneers were edged by guest North Reading, 175-171, at Sagamore Spring. The Hornets won the CAL Kinney Division title.
“It was a very close match,” pointed out Moresco. “We have had a lot of close losses this year.”
Daley led the team in points with 33 while Doherty scored 32. Brady Field and Aidan Bird both had 28 points while C.J. Patermo and Max Sabbagh rounded out the top six scores as both had 25 points.
With the defeat, the Pioneers finished the season at 3-8 as they tied for third place in the CAL Kinney Division.
On Oct. 2, the Pioneers fell to Manchester-Essex 158-140, at Essex Country Club.
“It is a tough course and only Paul has played it before,” said Moresco, as Essex County Club is a private course.
Doherty led the team in scoring with 29 points while Daley had 27. Patermo was third with 24.
On Sept. 30, the Pioneers were edged by host Georgetown, 149-144, at Black Swan Golf Club.
“Only two of our eight players have played there before,” said Moresco, who would like to see his kids play the public courses before the match as Black Swan is a public course.
Brady Cole led the Pioneers in points in this match with 31 while Daley scored 30.
