Dodwell,-David-webSPRINGFIELD, Ill.— David G. Dodwell, M.D., 56, of Springfield, IIl., passed away at 11:40 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, 2015 in Springfield.

David was born June 12, 1958 in Beverly, Mass, the son of Thomas and Virginia (Dalton) Dodwell. He married Lori Knopp on July 10, 1982 in Burlington, Mass.

David was a graduate of Lynnfield High School. In 1980, he graduated from Tufts University (where he met Lori) and earned a bachelor’s of science degree in chemical engineering. He received his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Afterwards, David completed his residency at Northwestern University and his fellowship at Cornell University.

David practiced at Springfield Clinic from 1989-2008. He had served as Medical Director of the Illinois Retina Center since 2008. David was a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, American Academy of Ophthalmology, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, American Retina Foundation, Research to Prevent Blindness, Inc., Illinois Association of Ophthalmology, American Medical Association, Illinois State Medical Society, Sangamon County Medical Society, and was a board member of the Independent Physicians Network.

David was an avid collector of fine art. His interests included film, golf, playing cards, and going to the beach. David was a loving father and son, as well as a generous husband and friend. He will be deeply missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his father.

David is survived by his wife, Lori Dodwell of Springfield; his two sons, Alex Dodwell of Richland, Wash., and Avery Dodwell of Springfield; his daughter, Jacqueline Dodwell of Middleton, Wisconsin; his mother, Virginia Dodwell of Peabody, Mass.; his brother, Wayne Dodwell of Amesbury, Mass., as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins and the staff at his practice.

Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.

A Memorial Ceremony and Gathering was held on Friday, June 12 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home in Springfield, Ill.
