MELROSE — Don W. Quon, longtime Melrose resident, passed away peacefully on January 29 at the age of 84. Born on October 22, 1939, in Hong Kong, one of four children of the late Gordon and S. Y. (Joe) Quon, Don’s journey led him to touch the lives of many and leave an indelible mark on those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Don immigrated to the United States as a young boy of ten, settling in Inverness, MS. It was there that he grew up, graduating from high school and enlisting in the United States Army. The Army played a significant role in Don’s life, serving as a source of immense pride for him. His military service shaped his character and instilled in him values of patriotism, honor and loyalty. Don’s dedication to his country was unwavering and he held his service close to his heart throughout his life. Don’s adventurous spirit and yearning for new opportunities eventually took him to Boston in 1978, where he decided to make Melrose his home in 1991.
Throughout his life, Don was a diligent and dedicated employee, serving as a manager at the China Garden restaurant in Malden. Don’s tireless efforts contributed to the success of the establishment and endeared him to both his colleagues and loyal customers.
Beyond his work, Don had a zest for life that was reflected in his hobbies and interests. He had a deep love for fishing, finding solace and tranquility by the water’s edge. Don cherished his family above all else and family gatherings were always filled with laughter, love and cherished memories. An annual pilgrimage to Mississippi allowed him to reconnect with his roots and strengthen the bonds with loved ones, as he shared stories of his journey and embraced the warmth of family ties.
Don had a wanderlust that led him to explore different destinations. From the serene shores of Hawaii to the enchantment of Disney, he found joy in experiencing new adventures and creating memories with loved ones. His infectious smile and positive outlook on life touched the lives of many and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Don was the beloved husband of Lily T. (Tam) Quon with whom he shared 53 years of marriage. Devoted father of Tammy Quon and her husband John Yen of Winchester and Don W. Quon, Jr. of Melrose. Loving brother of Shun W. Quon of CA, the late Wing O. and Dexter H. Quon. He is the loving grandfather of Jayson and Isabella Yen.
