obitmooney-webWAKEFIELD — Eugene V. Mooney Jr., 87, of Wakefield passed away on March 18 in Wilmington.

Born in Pelham Manor, N.Y., he was the son of the late Eugene and Sybil (Jennings) Mooney.

After graduating high school Gene served in the Marine Corps during World War II and received the Veterans Award and Sharpshooter Certificates.

Gene was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, a two-time hole in one award winner at Green Meadows in Hudson, N.H., and worked at Sears Roebuck. He was also a Eucharistic Minister at St. Joseph Church and was a longtime driver and equipment manager for the St. Joseph Band.

He was the beloved husband of Patricia B. (Barrett) Mooney. He was the loving father of Peter V. Mooney of Milford, Paul D. Mooney of Wilmington, Philip P. Mooney of Lexington and Pamela J. Hunt of Wakefield. He was the brother of the late Sybil Raymond, Lorraine Boyd, Betty Doyle, Patsy Puglisi and Alice Marshall. He was the loving grandfather of Brian and David Hunt, Ryan, Colin and Brendan Mooney, Irene Manolopoulos, Christine, Philip, Andrew, Mark and Katelyn Mooney. He was the great-grandfather of Cody Eugene Hunt and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Gene’s funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Wednesday at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Joseph Church, 173 Albion St., Wakefield at 10 o’clock. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. Interment, Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody.
