WOBURN — The Wakefield Memorial High field hockey team traveled to Woburn yesterday where it beat the Tanners decisively 5-0 for its first league win of the season.

Though thoroughly dominating Woburn in the first half, Wakefield only led 1-0 at halftime at Connolly Stadium against the winless Tanners.

The Warriors are now 2-7-3 overall and 1-7-3 in the Middlesex League Freedom division.

“We had multiple opportunities to get it in the net and we just didn’t capitalize. We weren’t crashing (and) we weren’t being aggressive enough in the circle,” explained Wakefield coach Cara Luca.

Ava Vaughn, Olivia Cameron and Julianne D’Ambrosio put pressure on Woburn but solid defense and great goaltending by Woburn’s Nora Newman repeatedly stymied Wakefield’s scoring attempts.

Woburn called a time out but it didn’t change the Wakefield momentum. Vanessa Kaddaras had a number of shots on net but Newman made a number of saves including a nice glove save.

The Wakefield pressure finally paid off when Alexi Truesdale scored and sent Wakefield into halftime leading 1-0.

Wakefield started off a little slow in the second half. Woburn was awarded a number of corners and the single goal lead looked like it was in jeopardy.

“I don’t know what happened there. I don’t know if the girls thought that a one-goal lead was OK but our defense stepped up. They may have come out a little flat at first but then they realized that they had to step it up,” acknowledged Luca.

Then Wakefield got another goal courtesy of Truesdale and after that Wakefield broke the game open. According to Luca, that was the result of her players crashing the net.

“That was the difference in the second half and I think they did more give and gos in the circle to get rid of it (the ball).”

Kaddaras had the next pair of goals for Wakefield to make it 4-0 and then Mila Frohlichstein notched Wakefield’s last goal late in the game for the 5-0 final.

Wakefield is off until Friday afternoon when it hosts Stoneham at 3:45 p.m. at Shaun Beasley Field.
