THE WINDS were swift on Lake Quannapowitt on July 25 and small white caps started forming. This proved too much for a medium sized sailboat. There was a water rescue. All went well but the sailboat is still in the lake. Poor captain. (Photos Courtesy of C.Mac Images/ADVimaging ©2018)

WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield Fire Department was able to rescue a sailor on Lake Quannapowitt early yesterday afternoon after his boat capsized.

It was unclear if yesterday’s strong winds were a factor, but several calls came in to police at around 12:15 p.m. reporting the overturned sailboat about 150 yards from Main Street in area of Lakeshore Drive.

Firefighters launched a fireboat from the Quannapowitt Yacht Club and were able to pull the sailor from the water and bring him back to the Yacht Club, where he was evaluated by emergency medical personnel. It was not believed that the man was taken to the hospital.

Firefighters continued to try to right the sailboat with the assistance of yacht club members, but due to the size of the boat and the fact that it kept getting hung up on the bottom of the Lake they were not successful. QYC members were planning to return later in the day to continue the effort.

At about 5:15 p.m., several more 911 calls were received about the same capsized boat as efforts continued to remove it from the water.
