SAUGUS — A 15-foot by 30-foot exterior deck on the back of the Melrose Fish and Game Club reportedly collapsed Wednesday night and fell on three large propane tanks below.

Someone at the club, located at the end of Melrose’s Slayton Road but which is actually in Saugus, called the Saugus Fire Department shortly after 9 p.m. According to Melrose fire officials with knowledge of what happened, melting snow on the clubhouse roof apparently slid off and impacted the deck, pulling it down onto propane tanks. At least one tank’s piping was damaged, creating a propane gas leak.

Melrose firefighters were on a call at the Masonic Apartments at the corner of Main Street and Wyoming  Avenue at the time of the Fish and Game report. A crew on Engine 3 went to Slayton Road, and were told to stand by a hydrant located near the clubhouse of Mt. Hood Golf Course.

They stayed for about an hour while Saugus firefighters dealt with the gas leak at the Fish and Game Club.

A call into Saugus Fire Chief  Don McQuaid was not immediately returned. The Weekly News was told he was inspecting the damage at the  Melrose Fish and Game Club.
