Boys’ track team has a relay squad, one freshman entered to run

NEW YORK, N.Y. — While the winter season is done for the Wakefield Memorial High sports teams, there are still five individual boys’ indoor track athletes competing.

The Warrior 4×800 relay team and a freshman will be running in the 2017 New Balance Indoor Nationals which will be held this weekend at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City.

The 4×800 relay team will include seniors Adam Roberto, Ryan Sullivan, and Nick McGee, and junior Matt Greatorex.

The freshman that has qualified to run is Tanner Jelllison and he will be running in the 400 meters.

Jellison will run on Saturday at 4:45 p.m. while the 4×800 relay championship division race will be the last event run on Saturday beginning at 7 p.m.

Wakefield had already qualified in the 4×800 relay, but the quartet of runners moved up to the championship division based upon their performance last Saturday at the New England Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. The Warriors posted a time of 8:00.31 breaking their own school record.

Wakefield is one of 35 teams in the championship division and will be run in section 1 with 11 other teams which include relays from Corning Track Club, N.Y.; Ridge Track Club, N.J.; Flyers Track Club, N.Y.; Ward Melville Track Club, N.Y.; St. Peter’s Track Club, N.Y.; Kingston Track Club, N.Y.; Hoover Track club, Ala.; Bergen Catholic Track Club, N.J.; Star Valley Track Club, WY.; Natick Track Club, MA.; and Lake Braddock Track Club, VA.

Jellison qualified to run in the freshman 400 based on his 600 meter time. Jellison is one of 45 ninth graders that will be running the quarter mile.

Jellison will be running in Section 1 with four other runners which include Murad Creary, Heat Track Club, N.C.; Clark Saben, St. John’s Track Club, WA;  Gerardo Rivera, Cary Track Club, N.C.; and Jaden Carter, Georgia Elite, GA.
