WAKEFIELD — On Tuesday, June 14, at 7 p.m., The Harry E. Nelson American Legion Post 63 of Wakefield will perform their annual Pause for the Pledge in front of the World War II Monument in the Veterans Memorial Common.

Commander Tom Collins will lead the group in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and have a short speech on Flag Day. Then some patriotic music will be played.

Following the Pause for the Pledge program the Boys Scouts of Troop 701 will perform a Flag Retirement Program to properly retired U.S. flags.

In the United States Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the Flag in the United Sates in 1777. It is also the birthday of the U.S. Army in established in 1775 by the resolution of the Second Continental Congress.

In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established Flag Day as June 14. In August of 1949 National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.

The members of AL Post 63 invite all young and old to these very important programs, the Pause for the Pledge and the flag retirement program by Troop 701.
