Nearly 90 runners turn out for fundraiser to benefit the WMHS boys’ and girls’ track programs

WAKEFIELD — Despite the wet conditions, 89 total runners competed in the Frozen Frolic Road Race on Saturday afternoon leading into the Holiday Stroll. The race, which was held to benefit the Wakefield Memorial High boys’ and girls’ track programs, started and finished in downtown Wakefield.

North Andover’s Nate Jenkins, 34, captured first overall in the men’s race as he ran the 3.4 mile course in a time of 16:53. Jenkins beat out Winchester’s Steve Ruane, 33, who timed in at 18:46.

Stoneham’s Sarah Phillips, 31, came in first in the women’s race as she clocked in at 21:19. Medford’s Bilian Mihaylova, 25, finished in second place in the women’s race as she timed in at 21:33.

Wakefield’s Ryan Kerrigan, 34, was the top finisher from Wakefield as he took third in the men’s race in a time of 19:06.

Rounding out the top 10 for the men were Methuen’s Geremia Ortega, Wakefield’s Alec Rodgers, Wakefield’s Robert Shaw, Brookline’s Tom O’Keefe, Wakefield’s Christian Brackett, Medford’s Perry Pappas and Everett’s Shane McNally. They posted times of 19:54, 20:36, 21:07, 21:53, 22:17, 22:52 and 23:27.

Rodgers and Shaw ran cross country this fall for the Warriors and Pappas is the Warrior boys’ cross country head coach.

Wakefield’s Cristina Winsor, 46, was the top female finisher from Wakefield as she captured third place in a time of 22:44.

Rounding out the top 10 for the women were Wakefield’s Erica Ferrell, Lynn’s Linnea Laverty, Wakefield’s Courtney Leahy, Wakefield’s Kyle Mahoney, Wakefield’s Nicole Jacob, Malden’s Jen Staples and Wakefield’s Michelle Aitken. They ran times of 24:25, 24:45, 24:50, 25:08, 25:36, 26:14 and 26:45.

Winsor and O’Keefe also were the female and male champions for the 40-99 age group.

The team award winner was the Wakefield Warriors with 45 points. The runners were Rodgers, Pappas and Wakefield resident Cassie Lucci. Lucci, 16, ran a time of 26:59.

Prior to the adult race, there was a one mile kids’ fun run.

Wakefield’s Raeve Recene, 10, came in first with a time of 6:50. Wakefield’s Will Riley, 9, finished second with a time of 7:26 and Wakefield’s Ben Stratton, 10, was third at 7:33.

The rest of the runners in the Kids’ Fun Run were from Wakefield. That included Jonathan D’Ambrosio (7:36), Grace Brackett (7:38), Fiona Recene (7:48), Graham Swanson (7:58), Drew Schermerhorn (8:00), Jack Neal (8:34), Sofia Macaluso (8:44), Maeve Schermerhorn (9:04) and Abby Wojtaszek (10:35).
