STONEHAM — George A. Getty, Jr., 77, of Stoneham, formerly of Townsend and Woburn, passed away after a long illness on Sunday morning, November 11, 2018. He was the husband of Anna E. (Fawcett) Getty.

Born in Malden and raised in Somerville and Woburn, he was the son of the late George A. Getty, Sr., and the late Clara (Rochon) Getty; and the step-son of the late Cecilia “Sis” Sutherland Getty.

After graduating from Woburn High School, Class of 1959, George enlisted in the United States Navy. He then re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, earning an honorable discharge in 1969.

George worked for the Boston & Maine Railroad, retiring in 2006. After working for the railroad, he had also worked part-time for Commonwealth Carrier in Woburn. Most recently George had worked as a driver for Van Pool of Fitchburg, transporting special needs kids in the Fitchburg area. He loved driving for Van Pool, and found it to be extremely gratifying and rewarding work. George and his wife had been living in Townsend for about 10 years before coming to Stoneham about four years ago.

George was a Life-Member of the George A. Campbell American Legion Post 101 in Woburn. In the 1980s, George managed the “A’s” Minor League Baseball Team in Woburn. He was also active in Woburn Little League, and he was a “Hockey Dad.” George was also an avid golfer, and was a member of the Westminster Country Club in Westminster, Mass.

In addition to his wife Anna, George is survived by two sons, George A. Getty, III and his wife Colleen of Wakefield, and
Stephen A. Getty of Fitchburg; and a daughter-in-law Amy Getty of Leominster. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Riley Brown, and Sidney, Alice, Clara, Madeline, and Charles Getty; one brother Joseph Sutherland and his wife Terry of Marlboro; two brothers-in-law Thomas Dean of Woburn, and Edwin Lord of Woburn; and many nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.

George was preceded in death by two sisters, the late Paula Dean, and the late Nancy Gray; and four brothers, the late Paul Getty, the late Ross Getty, the late James Sutherland, and the late John Sutherland.

A funeral service will be held at the Graham Funeral Home, 3 Arlington Rd., Woburn on Friday, November 16 at 10 a.m., followed by burial with military honors at the Woodbrook Cemetery in Woburn. Visiting hours will be at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 4:30-7:30 p.m.
