U.S. Navy veteran of WW II, Korea

 

MANSFIELD — George Boyajian, age 92, of Mansfield, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on Tuesday, February 10, 2015. He was the husband of the late Eleanor J. (Barron) Boyajian.

Born in Chelsea on December 11, 1922, he was a son of the late Oscar and Margaret (Samoorian) Boyajian. He grew up in Chelsea and was a 1940 graduate of Chelsea High School.

George proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy in both WWII and the Korean Conflict. During WWII he served aboard the SS-184 Skipjack and the SS-406 Sea Poacher. He and his fellow crewmembers bravely made eight war patrols for which he was awarded the Submarine Combat Medal. During the Korean Conflict he served aboard the SS-183 Seal. He was honorably discharged from the service with the rank of EM2 (SS).

George’s career began in the grain industry. He was a fully licensed grain inspector for the East Coast and was employed for the Boston Grain and Flour Exchange, of which he later became the Head Inspector. He was a member, past director and president of the New England Grain & Feed Council.

In 1970, Mr. Boyajian moved to Mansfield where he, along with his late wife Eleanor operated the former Mansfield Feed & Farm Supply for 15 years.

For the past 29 years, George had worked with the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. His positions included being a supervisor of catering and as a tour guide at the Patriots Hall of Fame.

Active in Masonic affairs, George was a member of St. James Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Mansfield, the Converse Lodge in Malden, and the Aleppo Temple Shrine in Wilmington.

He was a past president and chairman of the board at the former Mansfield Credit Union. His other affiliations included the Mansfield American Legion Post #198 and the Mansfield Lodge of Elks #2633. George was also a life member of the US Submarine Veterans of WWII and a former member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Vermont.

He was the brother of Christina Walters and her husband Roy of North Reading, and the late Sarkis Boyajian and Mary Shervanian. He is also survived by his sister–in–law Grace Boyajian of Lynnfield and several nieces and nephews, and their families.

His funeral service, was held on Monday, February 16  at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield. Burial will be at a later date at the Spring Brook Cemetery in Mansfield.

In lieu of flowers, George’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the New England Center for Homeless veterans, 17 Court St., Boston, MA 02108.
