George-Delaney-obit-9-11-15-webMELROSE — George Daniel Delaney, 85, passed away on Sept. 3 at EPOCH of Melrose Nursing Home.

George was born in Melrose on Oct. 3, 1929 to the late Daniel and Johanna (Gertsen) Delaney. He was raised in Melrose, graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1947 and had been a lifelong resident. George owned and operated the Skate and Ski Sport shop on Main Street in Melrose for many years, the Tennis Barn in Saugus and finished his career as the owner of Second Serve in Saugus, which was a tennis shop providing racquets and clothing to his customers.

He married his late wife, Mary, who passed away last April, in 1968. They enjoyed skiing, skating and playing tennis. They loved spending time in Waterville Valley, taking trips to Nantucket and visiting Sandwich on Cape Cod. George was a proud grandfather, had a great personality and a wonderful sense of humor. He provided many Melrosians with sports equipment throughout his life.

Mr. Delaney was the beloved husband of the late Mary J. (Niska) Delany. He was the loving father of Lia Swajian and her husband Robert of Haverhill. He was the proud grandfather of Elijah Delaney. He is also survived by many loving relatives and friends.

Visitation was held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster St., Melrose, on Tuesday, Sept. 8. A private burial took place at Wyoming Cemetery. To send a message of condolence please visit www.gatelyfh.com.
