LYNNFIELD — It was a successful home opener for the Lynnfield High girls’ cross country team on Sept. 25 as the Pioneers beat Ipswich, 20-41, on a cloudy, mild day which was good conditions for the runners.

With the victory, the Pioneers improved to 1-2 overall while the Tigers fell to 0-3.

Ipswich took first place but the Pioneers captured the next six places to win the meet.

Gabby Bottaro, for the third-consecutive meet, was the first finisher for the team with a time of 21:49 on the 2.9-mile course. She was followed by Caitlin Buoniconti (22:04), Kaila George (22:08), Abby Lopez (22:14), Shea Moore (23:01) and Maeve Wertz (23:11)

“We ran really well,” said Pioneers first-year head coach Liane Cook. “I had a good feeling about how we would do seeing Ipswich’s times coming into the meet. We did a good job or running close together.”

The Pioneers all wore matching blue and gold ribbons that they made at a team-bonding dinner.

“It shows the team spirit the girls have this year,” said Cook.

On Oct. 2, the Pioneers welcome Georgetown with that meet starting at 3:30 pm as the team looks to go to 2-2.
