Warriors score over 120 points, nearly match their season high

The WMHS girls’ gymnastics team scored 121.25 points in the Middlesex League Meet on Saturday at Stoneham High School. The members of the team included Kathryn Noble, Melia DiPietro, Alyssa Corso, Mia Romano, Olivia Kostopoulous, Lizzy Finn, Alyssa Vacca, Mary Gerace and Abby Harrington.

STONEHAM — The Wakefield Memorial High girls’ gymnastics team had the opportunity to compete against its peers on Saturday in the Middlesex League Meet which was held at Stoneham High School. While the young Warriors didn’t win the showcase, they had a good showing and posted one of their better scores of the season.

Wakefield scored 121.25 points and finished eighth in the team scoring. Stoneham won the meet at its home gymnasium with 133.175 points and Woburn was second with 132.8 points.

The Warriors’ highest scoring event was on vault where they tallied 31.95 points.

Mia Romano, a sophomore, scored an 8.35 on vault and was Wakefield’s high scorer. She finished ninth overall in the event.

Also competing on vault were sophomores Alyssa Corso (7.9), Olivia Kostopoulos (7.85) Abby Harrington (7.85) and freshman Alyssa Vacca (7.6).

On bars, Wakefield scored a 31.0 as a team.

Romano again was Wakefield’s top scorer as she received an 8.4 from the judges. She came in fifth overall among all M.L. competitors.

Also competing on bars for Wakefield was Harrington (8.1), Vacca (7.3), Kostopoulos (7.2) and Corso (6.9). Harrington was eighth overall on bars.

Wakefield had four competitors on the balance beam and the quartet of gymnasts combined to score 28.7 points.

Romano led the way on beam with a score of 8.3. Kostopolous was next with a 7.1, freshman Lizzie Finn scored a 6.7 and Corso tallied a score of 6.6.

On the floor exercise, the Warriors scored 29.6 points as a team.

Romano was Wakefield’s higher scorer in the fourth event as she received a 7.8 from the judges. That allowed her to finish ninth overall in the All Around with 32.85 points.

Right behind Romano was Harrington and Corso as they scored a 7.7 and 7.6, respectively.

Vacca scored a 6.5 on floor and Kathryn Noble checked in with a 6.0.
