MARBLEHEAD — In a non-league game on Monday afternoon, the North Reading High girls’ lacrosse team won at Marblehead, 13-11.  With that victory, the Hornets improved to 7-10 overall.

“That was our best game all year,” stated Hornets head coach Matt Costello. “The kids played inspired and selfless.”

North Reading led 6-5 at the half and were up 12-8 before they were outscored 3-1 down the stretch.

Faith Newton led the offense with four goals and one assist while Brianne Slattery had three goals and one assist. Mia Pittore and Jenna DiNapoli both had two goals and one assist.

Shea Tully and Callie MacLellan had the two other goals.

Hornet goalie, Kaitlyn Supple, made 12 saves to go to 7-10.

“Kaitlyn was unbelievable,” said Costello, about the junior net minder.

Last Saturday morning, the Hornets were edged by host Winthrop, 12-10, in another non-league game.

This is one game the team let slip away as they were leading 7-2 at halftime.

“We got beat on the draws in the second half and we were missing some of our more experienced players and that cost us,” said Costello, about the second half collapse.

Newton scored five times while Slattery had thee goals and one assist. Pittore and Makenzie Murphy both had one goal and one assist.

Addi Hajj added one assist.

Supple turned back 15 Viking shots.

On May 17, the Hornets lost to mighty Newburyport, 18-2, at home as the Clippers swept the season series.

“They are one of the best teams in the state,” said Costello, as the Clippers won the first meeting, 17-3, back on April 18. “They are very skilled and athletic.”

MacLellan had both Hornets goals while Slattery assisted on both of them.

Supple had five saves in net.

North Reading finished at 3-9 in the Cape Ann League.

The Hornets are ranked 14th in the MIAA Division 3 power rankings. The top 32 teams, regardless of record, at the end of the regular season, automatically qualify for the state tournament.

The brackets will be released on May 31.
