WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield Memorial High girls’ lacrosse team is now in a must win situation if it wants to return to the state tournament.

The Warriors gave defending Middlesex League Freedom division champion Watertown all it could handle, but in the end Wakefield came up short by an 11-9 tally last night at Landrigan Field.

Wakefield is now 6-9 overall on the season and it must win its final three games to get into the postseason. The Warriors have Burlington, Beverly, and Mystic Valley Charter School.

“We were down early,” said head coach Cara Luca. “Watertown scored four goals quickly to put us down 4-0.”

Wakefield came back to answer a goal scored by Brianna smith. Taylor Messina had a big day on offense scoring three goals with all her drives wrapping around the net.

Julia Brown had two goals as well.

Meg Foley, Courtney Hill, and Kelsey Czarnota each had one goal as well.

Despite falling behind, Wakefield climbed back into the game and trailed at halftime, 7-4.

Senior goalie Kim Wood made 10 saves for the Warriors, while the Watertown goalie made nine saves.

“We had more shots on net today making the Watertown goalie work. Defensively we held our own today,” said Luca. “We went from a zone defense to a man defense to slow the Watertown offense down.

“The girls worked hard today and didn’t give up. We came up short but we are moving forward to Burlington tomorrow. This is a must win game in order to stay alive for the tourney.”

The Warriors host the Red Devils this afternoon at 4 p.m. at Landrigan Field.
