Warriors have a great round to sweep the Big Blue

SALEM — After playing on a tough course on Tuesday, the members of the Warrior golf team must have thought playing on the Kernwood Country Club course was a piece of cake.

The scores certainly reflected that thought as Wakefield had one of its better outings of the season and topped Swampscott by a 45-27 score yesterday afternoon in a non-league match.

The Warriors increased their overall record to 4-2-1 on the season with the win.

“I think playing at the Winchester Country Club the day before helped us,” said Coach Dennis Bisso. “The greens were fast at the Kernwood. We had three players shoot in the 30s.”

Junior co-captain Dylan Melanson had a strong showing at number one as he shot a 36 for an even par. He prevailed by a 5.5-3.5 score.

At two, senior co-captain Kevin Lamattina halved his match, 4.5-4.5.

David Melanson, a sophomore, played at the third spot and he shot his best round of golf this season. Melanson scored a 37 and prevailed by a 7-2 score.

At four, sophomore Mike Guanci was edged 5-4.

Tim Hurley, a sophomore, played at number five and carded a 5-4 decision.

At the sixth position, Austin Collard, a sophomore, played his best round of golf this season. Collard shot a 39 and triumphed by a 7.5-1.5 tally.

The Warriors got two wins at the seventh and eighth spots which allowed them to win by a comfortable margin.

At seven, junior Steven Melanson won 6-3. At eight, junior Stephen Marino prevailed by a 5.5-3.5 score.

Wakefield takes on Melrose this afternoon at 3:15 p.m. at the Thomson Country Club in North Reading.
