WINTHROP — It’s almost a shame for the Warriors on the golf team that they don’t get a chance to play at the Winthrop Country Club more often. Yesterday afternoon in a non-league match against Winthrop, Wakefield rolled to a 48-24 triumph for its third win of the season.
Wakefield is now 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the Middlesex League Freedom division.
“The Winthrop Country Club was kind to us,” said Coach Dennis Bisso. “We won seven out of the eight matches.”
At number one, junior David Melanson halved his match, 4.5-4.5. Melanson led the whole way until he hit a ball out of bounds on the last hole.
The rest of the varsity contests went in Wakefield’s favor.
At the two and three spots, senior co-captain Dylan Melanson and junior Mike Guanci both pulled out 6-3 wins.
Meanwhile at four, five and six, junior Tim Hurley, senior co-captain Steven Melanson and senior Stephen Marino all posted identical 6.5-2.5 victories. Hurley continues to play well, while Melanson and Marino rebounded from a couple of tough outings at the five and six spots.
Austin Collard, a junior, easily prevailed by a 7-2 score at number seven.
At eight, Kevin Murray, a senior, edged his Viking foe by a 5-4 tally.
Wakefield also had two alternate matches. At nine, Justin Sullivan, a junior, dropped a 5.5-3.5 decision. At 10, sophomore John Evangelista earned a 5.5-3.5 triumph.
The Warriors have their fourth straight road match in as many days when they take on Melrose this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at the Bellevue Golf Course.
