NORTH READING — The month of October has gone well for the Wakefield Memorial High golf team. It has also helped that the Warriors have been at home the entire month as well.

Wakefield won its seventh match in a row and sixth contest in five days to wrap up the regular season as it posted a 38.5-33.5 triumph over Lexington on Friday afternoon in a makeup at the Thomson Country Club.

The Warriors wrapped up the regular season with a 10-4 overall and 7-4 record in the Middlesex League Freedom division. According to coach Dennis Bisso, Wakefield is behind Burlington which has a 6-3-1 record with one more contest remaining.

“We finished up with six wins in one week and have won seven in a row,” said Bisso. “We beat Lexington which is something we haven’t done in a long time.”

The Warriors dropped the first two matches at number one and number two against two very solid Minuteman players. At one, junior David Melanson dropped a 6-3 match. At two, junior Mike Guanci suffered a 7-2 setback.

But Wakefield went on a roll after that recording five straight victories.

At the third and fourth positions, senior co-captain Dylan Melanson and junior Tim Hurley pulled out identical 5.5-3.5 wins.

Austin Collard, a junior, played at number five and he carded a 6.5-2.5 victory.

At six, Steven Melanson, a senior co-captain, continued his solid play as he squeaked out a 5-4 triumph.

Kevin Murray, a senior, also came up big as the seventh spot as he posted a 7-2 win.

At number eight, senior Stephen Marino was edged by a 5-4 score.

Wakefield went 1-1 in the two alternate matches. At number nine, sophomore John Evangelista dropped a 5-4 decision. At 10, Justin Sullivan, a junior, prevailed by a 6.5-2.5 tally.

“Dylan Melanson has been on fire. He has won six straight,” said Bisso. “Steven Melanson has been red hot. He has won his last six matches. Also, Kevin Murray played unbelievable winning 7-2 at seven.”

The Warriors will now get ready for the Middlesex League shootout which will be made up on Thursday morning at 7:45 a.m. at the Bear Hill Golf Club after having been previously rained out. David Melanson, Guarino and Dylan Melanson will be three Warrior golfers representing WMHS.

On Monday, Oct. 19, Wakefield will compete in the Div. 2 North sectional qualifier at the Hillview Country Club. The Warriors are allowed to bring six golfers and Bisso mentioned that the team will have some sort of playoff this week to determine who will go.

“It’s a tough choice with so many of them playing well,” said Bisso.
