Top Bishop Fenwick after Woburn setback

PEABODY — Playing outside the Middlesex League has been good for the Warrior golf team.

Wakefield is 2-2 overall on the season and both of its wins have come against non-league competition with its latest victory being a 41-31 triumph over Bishop Fenwick yesterday afternoon at The Meadow at Peabody Golf Course.

The win came after the Warriors dropped a 41-31 match against Woburn on Monday afternoon at the Woburn Country Club. Wakefield has dropped both league contest so far and are searching for its first victory in the M.L. Freedom division.

Bishop Fenwick Match

The Warriors won over half of their contests against the Crusaders and three of those wins were among the top four positions in Wakefield’s lineup.

At number one, senior co-captain David Melanson posted a 6 1/2-2 1/2 triumph as he shot a 37.

Austin Collard, a senior, prevailed at three by the same 6 1/2-2 1/2 score. Collard shot a 39.

At four, senior Tim Hurley edged his Bishop Fenwick foe, 5-4. Hurley shot a 39.

John Evangelista, a senior, earned a 5 1/2-3 1/2 triumph at number five and Jake Nardone, a junior, edged his opponent by a 5-4 score at number eight.

The Warriors also halved two matches, 4 1/2-4 1/2, at number two and number seven. Senior co-captain Mike Guanci played at two and junior Matt Auld played at seven.

Justin Sullivan, a senior, played at the sixth position and dropped a close 5 1/2-3 1/2 decision.

Juliette Guanci, a sophomore, was listed as the alternate at number nine.

Woburn Match

The Warriors won just two matches and halved a contest as they came up short against the Tanners, Coach Chris Keane’s alma mater.

Collard pulled out a 5-4 triumph at the third spot as he shot a 42.

At number seven, Auld posted a 6-3 win.

The match that was halved was at two where Mike Guanci played and shot a 40.

The rest of the contests went in Woburn’s favor.

At one, Melanson dropped a close 5 1/2-3 1/2 decision while shooting a 40.

Hurley lost 7-2 at number four, Evanglista was defeated by a 6 1/2-2 1/2 score at five, Sullivan lost a close 5 1/2-3 1/2 match at the sixth position, and Nardone was edged, 5-4, at number eight.

Juliette Guanci and Tom Galvin, a sophomore, were the alternates at number nine and 10.

Wakefield hopes to earn its first league win when it hosts Wilmington this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at the Thomson Country Club.
