Warriors defeat Mt. Greylock, taken down by Somerset/Berkley

WAYLAND — The Wakefield Memorial High wrestling team competed in the state dual meet tournament on Saturday at Wayland High School. The Warriors made sure the trip wasn’t just a one and one as they won their first round match and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Wrestling Coaches (MIWCA) Div. 3 North sectional.

Wakefield posted a 48-27 first round victory over Mt. Greylock before losing to Somerset/Berkley in the quarterfinals by a 52-27 tally.

Mt. Greylock Meet

The Warriors won nine out of the 14 weight classes as it cruised past Mt. Greylock in the opening round.

At 106, sophomore Jack Spicer pinned Adam Cohen at 1:49.

Mt. Greylock won the next three weight classes.

At 113, Shannon Drager, a junior, was pinned by Rob Stutter at 5:23. Juke Rourke then accepted a forfeit at 120 before junior Evan McGuire dropped a 12-9 decision to Rob Malone at 126.

Connor Shine, a senior, got Wakefield six more points as he pinned Dylan Burke at 3:30 of the 132 bout.

At 138, freshman Jake Goodchild pinned Marcus Hillard at 2:45.

Ben Piercy, a sophomore, lost by pin to Travis Hilchey at 56 seconds of the 145 match.

Warrior senior Dan Bertini competed at the 152 weight class and he pinned Juan Montoya at 5:45.

At 160, Matt Murdocca, a sophomore, was pinned by Devin Pelletier at 1:03.

Wakefield won the final five weight classes to pull away and win the meet.

At 170, junior Evan Gourville squeaked out a 4-3 decision over Dave O’Brien

Matt Yirrrell, a senior, tallied a 6-0 decision over Maurice Metzkow at 182.

At 195, senior captain Dan Wensley made quick work of Paul Pearson as he won by pin at 10 seconds.

Nick Murphy, a senior, competed at 220 and pinned Nate Richardson a minute into the bout.

Senior captain Alex Kane moved up to 285 and didn’t miss a beat as he pinned Hunter Abriel at 3:01 for the final six points of the meet.

Somerset/Berkley Meet

The Warriors got off to a slow start losing the first nine weight classes before prevailing in the final five. The meet started with 113 and Wakefield surrendered all 52 points from 113 to the 170 weight class. Wakefield did win the heavier weight classes and the lightest weight class, 106, for its 27 points.

Drager, McGuire, Shine, and Goodchild all lost by pin at the 113, 120, 126, and 132 weight classes. Drager was defeated by Paul Chagnon at 1:13, McGuire was beaten by Sean Bothello at 1:45, Shine lost to Ethan Bartley at 2:00, and Goodchild was defeated by Nate Pacheco at 1:13.

At 138, Tony Ryan accepted a forfeit for Somerset/Berkley.

Piercy, Bertini, and Murdocca all lost by pin at the 145, 152, and 160 weight classes. Piercy was taken down by Austin Cooley at 1:01, Bertini was defeated by Jake Farina at 1:09, and Murdocca was beaten by Chandler Furtado at 1:58.

At 170, Gourville lost by major decision (14-0) to Mitch Farina.

The Warriors then won the final five bouts for all of their points.

Yirrell pulled out a 10-4 decision over Liam Mulvey at 182 to get Wakefield on the scoreboard.

At 195, Wensley pinned Jeff Griffin at 1:15.

Kane and Mike Lima, a junior, accepted forfeits at the 220 and 285 weight classes.

At 106, Spicer pinned Zach Martin at 1:00 for Wakefield’s final six points.

Next up for the Warriors are the individual postseason meets. First up is the Div. 3 North sectional meet which will be held at North Reading High School on Saturday.
