WAKEFIELD — Commander Tom Collins of Wakefield’s American Legion Post #63 needs your help.

The post is asking for assistance in placing flags on the more than 2000 veterans’ graves at Forest Glade and Lakeside cemeteries. Again this year, the week before Memorial Day, the American Legion and volunteers will place the flags.

Similar to last year, on Monday, May 21, members along with volunteers will assemble in front of the chapel at Lakeside Cemetery at 4 p.m. to decorate the graves. Likewise, members and volunteers will meet on Friday, May 25, at 4 p.m. at the veterans area at the front of Forest Glade Cemetery to decorate the graves.

In the past, Post 63 has had the help of school children, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, as well as adult groups and local volunteers. Post members hope the same volunteers as well as others will join in what has been a community project for many and one that has provided a fulfilling sense of pride to honor the veterans of all wars with American flags.

A screwdriver and a hammer are very useful in the placing of the flags.

The post has purchased some small decals to have family members place on the corner of the gravestones of unmarked veterans’ graves. Post representatives ask any family members to contact them so they can present a decal for the veterans’ unmarked graves.

Please contact Tom Collins at 781-245-8215 or Bill Walsh at 781-245-4787 if there are any questions, to let them know you are coming to help, to get a decal or afterwards to let the post know that it has missed putting a flag on a veteran’s grave.

The post looks forward to having many volunteers on May 21 at the Lakeside Cemetery on North Avenue and May 25 at Forest Glade on Lowell Street.
