YORK, MAINE – Mr. Herbert P. Ashness Jr. of York, Maine, formerly of Waltham, died Friday, Aug. 7, 2015 at York Hospital. He was 79.

Herb was born in Waltham on Dec. 20, 1935, a son of the late Herbert P. Sr. and Anna L (Vahey) Ashness. He had been a lifelong Waltham resident before moving with his wife Claire to York 15 years ago. The couple spent many happy Maine summers with their family and wintered for a number of years in Venice, Fla.

A 1954 graduate of Saint Charles High School in Waltham he attended the Bentley School of Accounting in Boston before its move to Waltham. Herb served with the United States Army Reserve after high school.

Until his retirement Herb worked for Arkwright Insurance Company in Waltham. In retirement he enjoyed playing golf in Maine where he belonged to the Cape Neddick Country Club and in Florida where he was a member of Capri Isles Golf Club in Venice.

He leaves his wife, Claire A. (Crowell) Ashness; his children, Michael B. Ashness of Derry, N.H., Stephen C. Ashness and his wife Kelly of North Reading and David P. Ashness and his wife Christine of Chelmsford; his grandchildren, Danika, Ryan, Matthew, Derek, Colleen and Sean Ashness; his sister, Pauline A. Gallagher of Weston and many nieces and nephews.

Herb was also a brother of the late Walter J. and Bernard W. Ashness.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, Aug. 12, in Saint Christopher Church, 4 Barrel Lane, York, Maine. Burial followed in First Parish Cemetery, York.
