FITCHBURG — The NRHS girls’ track and field team had a tremendous weekend at the Massachusetts Meet of Champions at Fitchburg State with Giuliana Ligor being named the Athlete of the Week by Bay State Running for her historic feat of winning two titles in both the 400 Meter Hurdles and 400 Meters.

Abigail Lilley and Sabrina Mini both competed in the Discus with Lilley taking 9th and Mini taking 22nd.

The girls 4×100 Meter Relay also just missed a podium spot, finishing 9th with a time of 49.71 which was a season best for the relay squad consisting of Julia Scammon, Giuliana Ligor, Georgia Robarts and Madison Vant.

GIULIANA LIGOR stood atop the podium at the Meet of Champions in both the 400 meter hurdles and the 400 meters. Her 400 hurdles time of 58.97 is a new state and New England record and 4th-best time in the country this year. (Courtesy Photo)

Hayden MacLellan medaled in two events taking 5th in the Pole Vault with a new personal best leap of 11′ 0″ and also took 5th in the 100 Meter Hurdles with another personal best of 15.20 seconds.

Callie MacLellan also medaled in two events, the Pentathlon and the High Jump. She took 2nd place in the grueling Pentathlon scoring a whopping 3100 points which is a new personal best and only 88 points away from the school record in the event. She then came back in the High Jump and went 5′ 4″ for 8th place.

Lastly, Ligor stole the show at the meet winning the 400 Meter Hurdles by dropping her personal best by over two seconds in running a nearly flawless race in 58.97 seconds. Her time not only shatters her own school record but is also the fastest time ever run by a high school athlete in the entire state and region of New England and is the 4th fastest time run in the country this year. Ligor was not done there as she came back to double in the 400 Meters, lowering her school record time to 55.62 seconds.

The Hornets were the highest performing team in the entire state of Massachusetts at this meet across all six divisions –a feat that has never been achieved not only for NRHS but by a school in one of the smaller divisions with an enrollment under 700 students. Congratulations to this entire group for its tremendous season.

Giuliana (400 Meter Hurdles and Shuttle Hurdle Relay), Callie (High Jump and SHR), Hayden (SHR) and Georgia (SHR) will continue their season as they will be competing at the New Balance Outdoor National Championship held at Penn’s Franklin Field in Philadelphia from June 13 to June 16 along with teammates Kate Denehy (Freshman Triple Jump), Sophie Gallivan (Freshman Javelin Throw) and Sydney Scholz (Freshman Javelin Throw).
