Iris-Mongeau-obit-webMELROSE — Iris M. (Perry) Mongeau, of Melrose, formerly of Malden, died on Feb. 15 at the age of 96.

Iris was born in Ballincollig, County Cork, Ireland and was raised in Malden, where she graduated from the Cheverus High School. She resided in Malden until 1953 and the past 63 years in Melrose, most recently at the Fitch Home. Iris was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary Church and St. Mary Ladies Sodality in Melrose for many years. She enjoyed creative work, including beautifully refinishing furniture, and she liked to go to and take others out to restaurants. Iris loved reading. It was her window to the world and source of countless conversations with her family.

Iris was the beloved wife of the late Arthur R. Mongeau for 63 years. She was the loving mother of Eileen Hinchey of Melrose; Jeanne Barthelmes of Peabody; Rita Mongeau Moore of Melrose; Rick Mongeau of Wellesley; Stephen Mongeau of Chelmsford; David Mongeau of Ohio; Peter Mongeau of Melrose and the late Katherine Kelly. She was the devoted sister of the late Olive Kinnon and her late husband Raymond. She is also survived by 24 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held at the Gately Funeral Home 79 West Foster St., Melrose on Thursday, Feb. 18. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home on Friday, Feb. 19 at 10 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary Church, Herbert Street, Melrose at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Burial will take place in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Melrose Public Library, 69 West Emerson St., Melrose MA 02176.
